EPISODE 4: RACIAL PROFILING

Four decades after the Civil Rights movement, we don’t expect to hear
stories of people harassed by the police because of the color of their
skin. Unfortunately, Episode 4 of the Freedom Files series will show
how racial profiling happens every day to many Americans all over the
country.

“DWB: Driving While Black or Brown.”

In the episode, you will meet Felix Morka and Laila Maher, who were
driving on the New Jersey Turnpike when they were pulled over by the
police, pulled out of their car, and had a gun pointed at them, as well
as Carlos Gonzales, who can’t talk to his son about a similar
experience in Los Angeles. You will learn about the high rates of
racial profiling by law enforcement on highways and roads all over the
country.

“Don’t Breathe the Air: Environmental Racism."

You will also meet Omar Freilla, who is from the Bronx, where asthma
rates among children are six times the national average. In many
low-income communities, families are exposed to disproportionate
amounts of air pollution due to industries allowed to operate there, a
problem that has worsened as environmental laws have been weakened.

"Freedom of Association? Not."

You will learn about hip-hop artist M1 and his colleagues, who were in
the middle of a photo shoot on the sidewalk when police officers
stopped by and asked for identification. When they asked the officers
why they wanted to see their ID, they were attacked by a crowd of
police officers, jailed, and released 3 days later without being
charged.

“Who Needs a Job?”

After 9/11, 82,000 men were questioned by the INS, and none were found
to be terrorists. You will hear from Daniel Joyce, who was arrested in
Massachusetts along with his business partner for the crime of being
Pakistani. As a result of the arrest and the related publicity, he was
forced to close his business and is now penniless, despite the fact
that his arrest was found to be without probable cause.

Through reenactments, archival footage, music, and interviews with
people who were harassed by the police or whose communities face
discriminatory policies, Episode 4 of The ACLU Freedom Files shows how
racial profiling is alive and well in America in the 21st century.
