[ACLU-CU ALERT] Jail Needs Assessment Public Input

Last October, Champaign County hired  the Institute for Law and Public Policy (ILPP), a California non-profit, to complete a comprehensive jail needs assessment.  This assessment is to include jail capacity projections, evaluation of current facilities and procedures, cost estimates for various jail construction or remodeling alternatives, and ways to reduce demand for jail bed space, including ways to reduce the length of stay for pretrial defendants.

Dr. Alan Kalmanoff of ILPP has visited a number of times over the past several months, met with various stakeholder groups and made progress reports to the County.  The final report will be due later next month. There is only one public session planned for providing input to ILPP, scheduled for April 1st, 6-8 pm at the Urbana Civic Center.  This meeting is co-sponsored by C-U Citizens for Peace and Justice, along with the Champaign County Community Justice Task Force.  The announcement is copied below.

Dr. Alan Kalmanoff

Dr. Kalmanoff is the Director of the Institute for Law and Public Policy (ILPP), the firm hired by hired by Champaign County to conduct a needs assessment regarding the county jail and related criminal justice issues. Dr. Kalmanoff has been interviewing people and gathering data for his assessment since November. This meeting will be an opportunity to hear some of his findings and to present your concerns to him in person.
