[ACLU-CU ALERT] Call the Governor!

Champaign County ACLU Announcements announce at aclu-cu.org

All,

We are hearing disturbing reports from Springfield today that Governor
Rauner is wavering on his support for Senate Bill 31, the Illinois TRUST
Act. For those of you who may not recall, this bill places reasonable,
constitutional limits on state and local police interaction with federal
immigration officials, furthering trust between local police and immigrant
communities all across Illinois. The TRUST Act will prevent local police
from:

   - Complying with immigration detainers and warrants not issued by a
   judge, and
   - Stopping, searching, or arresting anyone based on that person’s
   immigration or citizenship status.

Local police can still act upon a valid enforceable federal warrant, and
can still communicate with ICE.

This bill was the product of months of negotiations that included
immigration advocates, the office of the Attorney General, prosecutors, and
police.

*Please take a moment this afternoon and call Governor Rauner’s office in
Chicago – 312.814.2121 <(312)%20814-2121> – or Springfield – 217.782.0244
<(217)%20782-0244> – and tell him to sign Senate Bill 31! We need your
voice to be heard now. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact me.*
