RECENT ENGAGEMENT
In the recent Urbana budget hearings we advocated for greater social
service support and alternatives to police as responders. A compromise on
budget allocations was reached to set aside funding for non-police support.
Steering committee member Jane McClintock was instrumental in organizing
awareness of this issue and advocating.

In April, ACLU Champaign County sponsored and/or organized two events that
examined the need for more support for Public Defender Services in
Champaign County and evaluated how the new Pretrial Fairness Act (enacted
September 2023) is working in local and statewide courts. Hurray once more
for Illinois for pioneering a pretrial system without cash bail!

ACLU-CU VP Ruth Wyman organized a panel on this reform. The panel included
Chief Public Defender Elisabeth Pollock and ACLU Illinois Ben Ruddell.

ACLU-CU co-president Carol Leff participated in an online panel organized
by the League of Women Voters with Chief Public Defender Pollock.

During Reproductive Justice Week in late April, organized under a partner
organization by steering committee member Julie Laut, we co-sponsored two
panels that included Ameri Klafeta director of the Women’s and Reproductive
Rights Project fo*r *ACLU Illinois on the legal aspects of
post-Dobbs abortion access and legal issues concerning transgender health
treatment. https://www.ucrj.org

Many local steering committee members are bridges to ally organizations
that share our ACLU human and civil rights goals. But no experience is
necessary except a desire to work for a more equitable community.

If you are interested in getting involved, join our monthly
(September-June) meetings at the Champaign Public Library.
