*Dear Members and Friends,*

*WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW with **ILLINOIS LEGISLATION!* We continue to push for
 Deb’s Law, also known as Medical Aid in Dying. It has passed the House and
is now in the Senate.

The proposed legislation will allow a mentally capable, terminally ill
adult with a prognosis of six months or less the option to obtain a
prescription medication they may decide to take so they can die peacefully
and end their suffering.

Despite claims of opponents to the law, not a single substantiated case of
abuse or coercion has been found in the 26 years since the first medical
aid-in-dying law went into effect in 1997 in Oregon.

Voters want end of life options for their family members and for
themselves. Medical aid in dying is supported by 71% of Illinoisans and
more than two-thirds of Illinois doctors.

We were also at the *P**R**I**D**E**F**E**S**T* Parade and Fair on October
25th in Urbana. Despite the chilly weather, it was a festive, fun day.
Thanks to everyone who marched with us or came by our table to talk and
share information.

*URBANA SURVEILLANCE ORDINANCE*

ACLU of Champaign County supports the ordinance still under consideration
by the Urbana City Council concerning the acquisition of surveillance
technology by the Urbana Police Department. We feel strongly that
surveillance technology should be acquired only with public consent and
should include policies that regulate its use. Most Urbana residents we
speak with feel strongly about protecting their private data. This
ordinance has been vetted by the ACLU of Illinois legal staff.

*ACLU-IL CASE PROTECTING PEACEFUL PROTEST IN CHICAGO:*

FROM ACLU-IL: We joined a coalition of legal organizations to challenge the
attacks on First Amendment activity. Our clients include media
organizations and reporters who have been attacked as they attempted to
report on the activity both at Broadview and around the Chicagoland area.
We also represent clergy and protestors who have been hit with pepper balls
and tear gassed simply for gathering at the Broadview site to protest ICE
activity.

On October 9, 2025, a federal court granted our motion for a temporary
restraining order (TRO) that barred federal officers from using pepper
balls, chemical agents and other projectiles at Broadview and throughout
the Chicagoland area unless there is an imminent threat of physical danger
to federal forces – which the court said had not been present during the
indiscriminate use of force prior to the lawsuit.

On October 21, we filed an amended complaint that included people
protesting against ICE tactics in Chicago neighborhoods when federal agents
deployed pepper balls or tear gas against them.  We also filed a motion for
preliminary injunction seeking further protection for protesters, clergy,
and members of the press as the litigation moves forward.
