<div dir="ltr">In response to a request from the local chapters of NAACP, ACLU and the League of Women Voters and from the C-U Citizens for Peace and Justice, the Urbana City Council will be discussing Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) traffic stop data next Tuesday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. </div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The data show a disproportionate number of non-white drivers are stopped for traffic infractions. Also shown in the data is that non-white drivers are much more likely to be asked to consent to searches when no probable cause for a search exists or to be required to wait for a drug-sniffing dog to trigger a search and a much lower percent of non-white drivers whose cars are so searched are found with contraband than white drivers. </span></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">The discussion about the traffic stops appears on the agenda as the first substantive item so if you wish to speak at the meeting, be sure to arrive by 7:00 p.m. On the table in the back of the room when you first walk in, you'll find slips for people to fill out if they wish to address the city council. Or, you can just attend to listen. The Urbana City Council meets on the first floor of the municipal building at 400 S. Vine Street in downtown Urbana.
