The pro-choice bill, House Bill 40, is now on Governor Rauner's desk awaiting his signature or veto. Please call the Governor's office as soon as possible to ask him to sign House Bill 40 in its entirety. Call 217-782-0244

House Bill 40 removes from the Illinois Criminal Code a law that's been on the books since 1975 (720 ILCS 510/1) that says if the U.S. Supreme Court ever modifies or reverses the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, abortion will automatically become illegal in Illinois with no exceptions for health complications, pregnancy resulting from rape or incest or any reason other than to save the life of the pregnant woman.

House Bill 40 repeals the harmful discriminatory Illinois law that now prevents low-income women from obtaining abortion care if their care is provided under the Medicaid program.

House Bill 40 also repeals the discriminatory Illinois law that prohibits health insurance providers from covering abortion care for state employees for any reason unless the procedure is necessary to save the life of the employee.

House Bill 40 is necessary to ensure that every woman in Illinois can make her own health care decisions about pregnancy and have access to safe medical care.

Ask Governor Rauner to sign House Bill 40 in its current form: 217-782-0244
